Rarity tiers

Legendary

100 points. One of a kind: no other pub on the map has the name.

Rare

70 to 99 points. 2 to 6 pubs share the name.

Uncommon

40 to 69 points. 7 to 43 pubs.

Common

1 to 39 points. 44 or more pubs, such as Red Lion, Crown and Royal Oak.

How a name is scored

Each name is worth 100 points if it is one of a kind, falling smoothly to 1 point for the most common name in the list. Each pub counts once, so two pubs with the same name in different towns both score.

Pubs with the namePointsTier

Counts come from OpenStreetMap: 38,185 named pubs across the UK. Names are matched ignoring "The", capitals and apostrophes. Spelling variants are scored as the common spelling, so "Red Lyon", "Wheat Sheaf" and "Crown Inn" count with Red Lion, Wheatsheaf and Crown. Where a pub has no postcode on the map, the list shows the postcode area of the nearest pub that has one. A pub that is not on the list can be logged by hand, and scores as one of a kind unless its name is in the list. Pub data © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL.
